And most of all, I’ve seen the impact of ill-fitting prostheses.

I’ve heard countless stories from people living with amputations where they tell me they feel vulnerable and even embarrassed by their treatment from the NHS.
And having worked in the National Health Service for over 26 years, I saw those stories become more and more common.
I felt that wasn’t good enough.
A frustrated start
I first qualified as a Prosthetist in New Zealand back in 1988.
After six years of rigorous training, I felt ready to take on the world.
But life had other plans.
When I returned to the UK in 1990, I was hit with the harsh reality that my qualifications weren’t recognised here.
It was a gut punch, but it also lit a fire in me.
Back to school, again
Determined to work within the NHS, I made an excruciating decision: I enrolled in a prosthetics course for a second time.
For three more years, I immersed myself in the courses at the London School of Prosthetics and the City of Westminster College.
It wasn’t easy, but in 1993, I received my second qualification as a clinical Prosthetist.
Learning what really matters
For the next 26 years, I worked within the NHS, serving as both a Prosthetist and a service/contract manager.
While the technical aspect of prosthesis design and manufacture was fascinating, it was the human side of the work that drove me.
I saw firsthand the struggles, the triumphs, the tears, and the hopes of people living with limb differences.
And I learned what made the expert prosthetists so good didn’t come from their technical ability to create perfect fitting prostheses…
It came from understanding the needs of the person wearing the prosthesis.
Why Design Prosthetics
Eventually, I began to grow frustrated with the deterioration of the NHS.
More and more people weren’t getting the care they needed. And there were fewer and fewer great prosthetists remaining.
I knew I could do more, but I was limited by the system I worked in.
So after nearly three decades in the NHS, I left.
And started Design Prosthetics.
Here, I get to practice how I think the NHS should practice.
And the biggest difference? Time.
